An informal political term to describe a prosecutor or district attorney whose election campaign allegedly received financial support, directly or indirectly, from organizations associated with billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros.
The term is most commonly used in debates over criminal justice reform, as many of the prosecutors so labeled have supported leftist policies such as reduced cash bail, alternatives to incarceration, and changes in prosecution practices in “progressive” (woke) cities.
Larry Krasner (Philadelphia), Kim Foxx (Chicago), George Gascón (Los Angeles), Chesa Boudin (San Francisco), Kim Gardner (St. Louis), Jose Garza (Austin), Alvin Bragg (New York City), John Creuzot (Dallas), and Rachael Rollins (Boston) are commonly considered to be Soros prosecutors.
They are often associated with a “progressive prosecutor” approach, which may include policies such as limiting sentence enhancements, reducing the use of cash bail, seeking alternatives to incarceration for some offenses, declining to prosecute certain low-level crimes, emphasizing criminal justice reform and addressing racial disparities in the justice system.
