Like many Americans trying to keep one eye on the nation’s direction, I recently undertook the grueling task of watching President Joe Biden’s 2023 State of the Union Address.
I expected spin, misdirection, and shallow political theater. I wasn’t disappointed. But what stood out was not just the familiar pattern of progressive rhetoric—it was the staggering disconnect between the president’s speech and the real condition of our nation. It was, in short, a performance deserving of a failing grade.
Social Security and Medicare: Democrat Scare Tactics
One of Biden’s favorite talking points was the claim that Republicans are out to destroy Social Security and Medicare. This is a timeworn Democrat strategy—scare the elderly into believing their benefits will be ripped away unless they vote blue.
But here’s the truth: the real danger to these vital programs isn’t fiscal conservatism—it’s fiscal insanity. The reckless spending under Democrat leadership, especially the Biden administration’s “woke” economic agenda, has undermined the entire financial structure of our country. Inflation, increased entitlement spending, and radical ESG policies are pressing the system from every side.
A few Republican senators—Rick Scott, Mike Lee, and Ron Johnson—have sounded the alarm, not to abolish these programs, but to ensure their solvency. That’s a far cry from the strawman the Left parades in front of frightened retirees.
The Abortion Connection: 65 Million Workers Lost
Here’s a truth few dare to say out loud: one of the biggest threats to Social Security and Medicare is the legacy of Roe v. Wade.
Since 1973, over 65 million preborn lives have been extinguished. That’s 65 million potential contributors to the tax base—workers, innovators, business owners, teachers, parents, soldiers. Their absence means fewer people paying into Social Security and Medicare, fewer consumers, fewer families, fewer communities.
The so-called “sexual revolution” unleashed a culture of death that has led to demographic collapse. And now we are surprised that entitlement programs are struggling?
This isn’t hypothetical. It’s arithmetic. And it’s moral. Those who have consistently voted for pro-abortion Democrat candidates share responsibility for undermining the very systems they claim to protect.
ESG Investing: Retirement Theft, Codified
While seniors worry about checks and cost of living, Biden’s administration quietly passed a rule allowing retirement fund managers to use Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria to guide investment decisions—even if it means sacrificing financial return.
This means retirement accounts can now be legally redirected into failing “woke” corporations that score high on progressive checklists (like diversity quotas and climate virtue-signaling), regardless of profit or fiduciary responsibility.
It’s legalized theft of your retirement. This is government coercion for ideological investment, and it betrays every principle of sound economic stewardship.
The National Debt: Biden’s Deceptive Blame Game
In a moment of shameless gaslighting, President Biden claimed that Donald Trump contributed more to the national debt than any other president. Fact check: false.
While it’s true that Trump presided over major COVID-era spending, the largest contributions to our national debt came from the Obama-Biden administration—$6.7 trillion over eight years. Trump’s contribution stands at $6.6 trillion, but his term included an unprecedented global pandemic.
Compare that to Biden’s own record: in just two years, he added nearly $4.8 trillion to the debt—without a global emergency on the scale of COVID-19. And let’s not forget the inflationary disaster his policies have sparked.
Comparisons without context are the refuge of the dishonest.
The Ideological Rot: From Bathrooms to Marxism
Let me address one local critic who challenged my use of the term “communism.” While I do distinguish between classical Marxism and modern wokeness, the ideological ancestry is undeniable. What we call “wokeness” today is best described as Neo-Marxism—a retooled, culturally focused version of Marx’s old class warfare narrative.
If you’d like to redistribute “The Communist Manifesto,” I suggest state park outhouses as appropriate depositories—especially when there’s a toilet paper shortage.
Seriously though, wokeness is the fruit of an anti-Christian worldview that denies the created order, erases gender distinctions, and despises traditional values. Consider the absurdity of modern progressivism:
- Men in women’s bathrooms and locker rooms
- Boys in girls’ sports
- Drag shows marketed to children
- Gender transition of minors without parental consent
This is what happens when society rejects God’s Word and exalts human “wisdom.” As Jesus said, “the blind lead the blind, and both fall into the ditch.”
A Word to Christians: Get Grounded in God’s Word
You don’t need a degree in economics or philosophy to see that something is deeply wrong in America. A good understanding of the Bible is worth more than silver and gold. It not only tells you where history is headed—it tells you who you are, why you’re here, and what God requires of you.
As someone with a business background and significant study in history and philosophy, I can trace the ideological madness we see today. But any discerning Christian, armed with Scripture, can see through the lies.
If you’re looking for solid biblical teaching, I recommend Alistair Begg at Truth for Life. He won’t tickle your ears, but he will anchor your soul.
Final Thoughts
Biden’s 2023 State of the Union was not a serious diagnosis of our national condition. It was a carefully curated performance designed to preserve power and deflect blame. But behind the applause lines and hollow optimism lies a failing record—economically, morally, and ideologically.
America doesn’t need more empty words. It needs truth. And it needs men and women of conviction to speak that truth without apology.
Stay alert. Stay informed. And stay rooted in God’s Word.

I recommend these Youtube channels and commentators for good content on politics and news from a Christian and/or conservative worldview: Albert Mohler, Allie Beth Stuckey, Bill O’Reilly, CBN News, Hugh Hewitt, John Anderson Media (Australia), Nick Freitas, Ruthless Podcast (language warning), Scott Jennings, The Hot Zone with Chuck Holton, Vince Dao, and Verdict with Ted Cruz.
For livestreaming of political protests and riots by conservative commentators, check out Nate Friedman, Cam Higby, James Klug, and Nick Shirley. I don’t agree with the perspectives of all these commentators and the language of protesters is often obscene. Most news outlets will not cover these illegal assemblies, though, because it doesn’t promote their narrative.
Depictions of Jesus Christ are used in some illustrations. I realize that some including conservative Presbyterians consider this to be idolatry. I respectfully disagree with their position on this matter as the commandment forbids worshiping such depictions, and I do not worship these illustrations.
