Western nations, and the United Kingdom in particular, are suffering under the weight of an ideological contradiction. On one hand, multiculturalism promises pluralism, tolerance, and social cohesion. On the other, progressive elites increasingly police speech, suppress dissent, and enforce ideological conformity. This is most vividly seen in the realm of free speech—where different groups (Christians, Muslims, Jews, and progressives) are treated with inconsistent standards. The resulting chaos is not incidental. It is the natural consequence of a society that has rejected the unifying, objective truth revealed in Scripture.
Melvin Tinker, in his prophetic book That Hideous Strength: How the West Was Lost, warned that Western culture is collapsing under the influence of a new ideological religion—what he calls “Cultural Marxism.” Drawing on Orwell’s dystopian vision and C.S. Lewis’s insights into disordered humanity, Tinker argued that the West’s rejection of the Christian worldview has not led to liberation but to cultural bondage, confusion, and coercion.
This essay builds upon that insight. It asserts that the UK’s selective enforcement of speech laws, its failure to protect vulnerable children, and its increasing criminalization of conscience all point to one core truth: humanity cannot flourish under ideological pluralism. We need a metanarrative rooted not in mutable ideologies, but in the unchanging Word of God.
Legal Frameworks and the Collapse of Neutrality
The UK’s legal commitment to free speech is enshrined in Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Yet, this right is “qualified,” subject to limitations for reasons of national security, public order, or “protection of morals.” This allows the government, universities, and employers to restrict expression they deem “harmful,” often guided by the reigning progressive moral code.
By contrast, the United States protects speech through the First Amendment, allowing far broader expression, including offensive or controversial ideas, unless they meet narrow exceptions like incitement to violence.
This discrepancy reveals an important truth: laws do not float in a vacuum. They rest on moral frameworks. When Britain adopted progressivism as its civic religion, its commitment to speech freedom began to rot from within. Melvin Tinker would call this “the new priesthood of the woke,” wherein cultural power is wielded not to preserve liberty, but to impose a rival gospel.
Four Groups Under Unequal Speech Law
Christians have become the softest target. Army veteran Adam Smith-Connor was convicted for silently praying near an abortion clinic. Isabel Vaughan-Spruce was arrested twice—once for merely standing in thought. These are not Orwellian hypotheticals. They are legal records. The message is clear: orthodox Christianity is no longer welcome in the public square unless neutered of its moral clarity.
Muslims, by contrast, enjoy de facto protections. When protester Hamit Coskun burned a Qur’an outside the Turkish consulate, he was prosecuted for religiously aggravated public order offenses. Meanwhile, the teacher at Batley Grammar School who showed an image of Muhammad was forced into hiding. Authorities responded not by defending liberty, but by apologizing to the offended.
Jews occupy a precarious position. While antisemitism is condemned rhetorically, it is tolerated in progressive spaces—especially in universities where anti-Zionism often masks deep-seated bigotry. The fact that over thirty British universities refuse to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism despite rising reports of harassment speaks volumes.
Progressive ideologues, by contrast, are protected and promoted. Their views on gender, race, and sexuality are taught in schools, enforced by HR departments, and backed by law. Disagreement is punished. One might criticize Christianity or traditional family structures with impunity—but misgender someone, even unintentionally, and you may face criminal investigation.
Tinker would describe this as “a shifting moral order enforced by an absolutist state.” It is a cultural revolution with smiling faces and bureaucratic teeth.
Where Multiculturalism Becomes Babel
In the story of Babel (Genesis 11), humanity attempted to build unity on its own terms. God scattered them by confusing their language. Today, Britain attempts the same feat—constructing a multicultural society without a unifying moral framework. The result is predictable: confusion, fear, and fragmentation.
Nowhere is this more tragically clear than in the grooming gang scandals of Rotherham, Rochdale, and Telford. For decades, Pakistani men systematically abused white working-class girls. Reports were suppressed. Police were silent. Social workers were intimidated. Why? Because officials feared being called racist. Protecting ideological inclusion took precedence over protecting children.
This is what happens when a culture elevates “offense avoidance” above truth. It becomes what Orwell feared: a society where language is manipulated to serve power, and where uncomfortable facts are fed into the memory hole.
The Memory Hole and the Rewriting of Reality
Orwell’s “memory hole” was a chute used to destroy inconvenient records. In today’s UK, the memory hole is digital, bureaucratic, and psychological. Non-crime hate incidents are recorded by police even when no law is broken. Silent prayers are prosecuted. Dissenters are de-platformed and digitally scrubbed.
Melvin Tinker warned that this wasn’t merely censorship—it was catechesis. The new regime doesn’t just want silence from Christians. It wants consent. It demands not just tolerance of lies, but affirmation of them.
This is not coexistence. This is coercion masquerading as compassion.
The Christian Metanarrative: Unity Without Tyranny
What, then, is the answer? Not a return to “neutral secularism,” which always bends toward the loudest moral majority. The only stable foundation for liberty is the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Scripture declares that Jesus is the Logos—the Word by whom all things were made and in whom all things hold together (John 1:1–3; Colossians 1:17). Christ is not one truth among many. He is the truth. And through His death and resurrection, He calls all people to repentance, reconciliation, and unity—not through force, but through faith.
Ephesians 1:10 tells us God’s eternal plan is “to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth” (ESV). Philippians 2:10–11 affirms that every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Melvin Tinker would insist that only the Christian worldview can reconcile freedom with order, truth with grace, and diversity with peace. All other systems—progressivism, Islamism, secular liberalism—either fragment society or crush it.
The Church must therefore recover its prophetic voice. It must preach not just personal salvation, but cultural redemption. It must speak into law, education, and government with the courage of Christ and the compassion of Christ.
Conclusion: From Babel to Zion
The United Kingdom is not merely in legal confusion—it is in theological rebellion. It has traded the gospel for a gospel of inclusion, the cross for the rainbow, and truth for feelings. In doing so, it has created a society where freedom is partial, justice is political, and speech is conditional.
But Christ is building something better. Revelation 21 speaks of the New Jerusalem, where the nations walk by the light of God’s truth, and where nothing unclean enters. This is no pluralist utopia. It is a redeemed cosmos under one King.
Until then, the Church must proclaim boldly:
“There is one body and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all” (Ephesians 4:4–6 ESV).
Let Babylon fall. Let Zion rise.

Some sources of information may reflect a libertarian and/or atheistic perspective. I may not agree with all of their opinions, but they offer some worthwhile comments on the topic under discussion.
Additionally, language used in the videos may be coarse. Coarse language does not reflect my personal standards.
Also, I do not acknowledge that anyone transitions from male to female, and vice versa. While I might use the language of the left, I do not believe their concepts. Trans men are women deluded into thinking they are men, and trans women are men deluded into thinking they are women. Trans men are not men, and trans women are not women.
Finally, those on the left often criticize my sources of information, which are primarily conservative and/or Christian. Truth is truth, regardless of how we feel about it. Leftists are largely led by their emotion rather than facts. It is no small wonder that they would criticize the sources that I provide. And, ultimately, my wordview is governed by Scripture. Many of my critics are not biblical Christians.
