anti-colonialism

« Back to Glossary Index

The opposition to colonial rule and the effort to achieve political, cultural, and economic self-determination for peoples subject to foreign domination. In modern social justice and critical theory movements, anti-colonialism frequently extends beyond opposition to historical empires and includes challenges to perceived forms of cultural, economic, or ideological dominance in contemporary society. Critics contend that some versions of anti-colonialism are influenced by Neo-Marxist assumptions that interpret social relations primarily through power struggles between dominant and subordinate groups.
