chattel slavery

A form of slavery in which a person is legally regarded as the personal property of another person and may be bought, sold, inherited, or transferred like other forms of property. In the American South, chattel slavery generally involved lifelong, hereditary bondage in which the legal status of slavery passed from parents to children.
