mainline Christianity

« Back to Glossary Index

A group of historic American Protestant denominations often associated with the “Seven Sisters of American Protestantism”: the United Methodist Church (UMC), Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), Presbyterian Church (USA) (PCUSA), Episcopal Church (TEC), American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA), United Church of Christ (UCC), and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) (CC).

In recent decades, many of these denominations have adopted nonblblical progressive (worldly) positions on issues such as abortion, women’s ordination, homosexuality, and gender ideology, though views among individual pastors, churches and members can still vary.

These denominations are not recommended as a sound source of information and are widely considered as fallen or apostate churches.
