The tragic death of Breonna Taylor on March 13, 2020, became one of the most iconic and controversial events of that year, a year already marked by COVID-19 lockdowns, urban unrest, and political upheaval. Taylor’s death at the hands of police during a narcotics raid in Louisville, Kentucky, was quickly elevated into a national symbol of racial injustice, systemic oppression, and police brutality—especially by progressive activists and media outlets. Yet, the full story—its facts, context, and consequences—differs significantly from the emotional and ideological narrative many Americans were given.
This blog post offers a comprehensive narrative of the Breonna Taylor case. It explores the true events leading to her death, the confusion between two men in her life (Jamarcus Glover and Kenneth Walker), the role of armed militias like the NFAC, and the deliberate distortion by partisan media to fuel unrest and promote Neo-Marxist ideology. While the loss of life was undeniably tragic, the manipulation of truth surrounding it had its own national consequences—on justice, trust, and public safety.
Who Was Breonna Taylor?
Breonna Taylor was a 26-year-old woman who had worked as an EMT and ER technician but was not employed at the time of her death. Media portrayals often referred to her as a “healthcare hero” or “frontline worker,” crafting a moral frame around her image that was emotionally powerful but not entirely accurate.
Complicating her legacy was her past relationship with Jamarcus Glover, a suspected drug trafficker. Glover had used her apartment address to receive mail and had listed her phone number as a contact. In 2016, a man was found dead in a rental car that Taylor had secured for Glover’s use. While these facts do not prove she was involved in criminal activity, they undermine the pristine image presented in the press and suggest a more complex reality.
The Target of the Raid—Glover, Not Walker
Understanding the true pretext for the raid is crucial to understanding the injustice of the media narrative that followed.
Jamarcus Glover:
- A repeat offender, Glover was the actual target of the drug investigation.
- He was known to police as a significant figure in a drug trafficking operation.
- Police surveillance suggested packages were being delivered to Taylor’s home, allegedly on his behalf.
- However, postal inspectors later stated that no such packages were identified, meaning part of the warrant’s affidavit was based on false information.
- After Taylor’s death, Glover gave interviews asserting that Taylor had nothing to do with his criminal activity and that she was not storing drugs for him.
Kenneth Walker:
- Taylor’s boyfriend at the time of the raid, Walker was not the target of any investigation.
- On the night of the raid, he believed the couple was experiencing a home invasion and fired a single shot, striking Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly.
- The officers returned fire, tragically killing Taylor in the process.
- Walker was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, but those charges were permanently dismissed under Kentucky’s stand-your-ground laws.
The media, however, blurred the lines between Glover and Walker—presenting the raid as a random, unjustified incursion on an innocent black couple. They omitted that the apartment was included in a larger narcotics investigation targeting a known drug trafficker. They omitted that Walker, not the police, fired first.
The Police Operation and Legal Aftermath
The Raid:
- Conducted by Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) narcotics officers.
- The warrant was obtained under false premises—that Glover had been receiving suspicious packages at Taylor’s address.
- The officers claimed they knocked and announced themselves, but Walker claimed they did not. Dispute remains.
Legal Outcomes:
- Detective Joshua Jaynes, who submitted the warrant affidavit, was later fired and federally charged with conspiracy for falsifying information.
- Kenneth Walker received a $2 million settlement from the city.
- Several officers were indicted on federal civil rights charges in 2022 for their roles in the raid and cover-up.
- Glover later pled guilty to drug trafficking and, in 2023, was again arrested for organized drug activity, including use of minors in heroin distribution.
The Protests and Rise of the NFAC Militia
In the aftermath of Taylor’s death and George Floyd’s killing in Minneapolis, the streets of America erupted in protest. Louisville became one of the epicenters of this unrest.
Protests and Violence:
- Thousands took to the streets demanding justice for Taylor.
- “Say Her Name” became a rallying cry.
- Businesses were looted, government buildings vandalized, and tensions with law enforcement escalated nationwide.
- AG Daniel Cameron, a black Republican, announced that the grand jury found no basis to charge the officers with Taylor’s death. Progressive media demonized him, ignoring the legal facts and focusing on race and party.
The NFAC (Not F***ing Around Coalition):
- A heavily armed Black militia led by a man known as “Grandmaster Jay” (real name: John Fitzgerald Johnson).
- The NFAC paraded through Louisville in July 2020 with AR-15-style rifles and black uniforms, promising to return if the results of the investigation were unsatisfactory.
- The group claimed to be well-disciplined and composed of former military members.
However, their display was marred by embarrassing and dangerous mishaps:
- One NFAC member accidentally discharged their weapon, injuring three of their own during a public demonstration.
- The group’s lack of trigger discipline and basic safety protocols was on full display, contradicting the commander’s claims of tactical superiority.
- In 2022, Johnson was convicted and sentenced to over 7 years in prison for pointing his rifle at law enforcement officers during one of the protests.
These incidents highlighted the volatility of armed political movements—especially when driven by grievance narratives rather than discipline and principle.
Media Malpractice and Ideological Exploitation
The media’s role in the Breonna Taylor saga cannot be overstated. Major outlets including MSNBC, NPR, CNN, and The New York Times:
- Repeatedly claimed or implied that Taylor was shot “in her sleep” or that the police entered without knocking.
- Omitted crucial facts about the boyfriend shooting first.
- Failed to distinguish between Jamarcus Glover and Kenneth Walker.
- Turned Taylor into a martyr for “systemic racism,” despite the legal facts not supporting that narrative.
Why the Misrepresentation?
This narrative served multiple ideological purposes:
- Fueling Neo-Marxist worldviews: By framing the issue in terms of racial struggle, oppression, and state violence, the media gave ammunition to those pushing Critical Race Theory and related ideologies.
- Election-year strategy: In 2020, stories like Taylor’s were weaponized to galvanize left-leaning voters and demonize law enforcement—both of which were seen as aligned with conservative values.
- Media activism: Outlets increasingly saw their role as moral crusaders rather than neutral reporters, choosing narratives that advance “social justice” over hard truth.
A Nation Divided by Narrative
The Breonna Taylor shooting became more than a tragedy—it became a parable for two diverging versions of America:
Narrative | Key Elements |
---|---|
Progressive Version | Police executed a no-knock raid, killed a black woman in her sleep, and escaped accountability because of systemic racism. Protests were justified. |
Conservative Version | Police acted on a flawed warrant in an investigation involving a known drug trafficker. Taylor’s boyfriend fired first. Media distorted facts, stoked unrest, and vilified lawful institutions. |
The emotional power of the progressive narrative drowned out the truth for millions. But as facts emerged, it became clear that the real injustice was the deliberate confusion and propaganda spread by media elites and ideologues.
Conclusion
Breonna Taylor’s death was a heartbreaking tragedy. But tragedy should never be manipulated into a political weapon through distortion and deception. The facts of the case—imperfect, human, complex—deserved careful scrutiny, not slogans. Yet much of the public discourse abandoned truth in favor of narrative.
The fallout included ruined lives, urban chaos, threats to public safety (such as the NFAC’s armed march), and lasting damage to public trust. In the age of media activism, stories like this serve as case studies in how truth can be sacrificed on the altar of ideology.
We must demand better—from our press, our leaders, and ourselves.
