Founded in 2001 in the wake of the disputed Bush-Gore election and the lead-up to the Iraq War, Truthout emerged as a digital nonprofit news organization with an openly left-wing, activist bent. Its stated mission is to provide “independent reporting and commentary on a diverse range of social justice issues,” and unlike many legacy outlets, it has never pretended to be neutral or bipartisan. From the beginning, Truthout’s identity has been unapologetically ideological—and the ideology is unmistakably Neo-Marxist.
Truthout operates under a 501(c)(3) nonprofit structure, which means it is funded not by advertisers or subscriptions, but by donations from progressive foundations, activist philanthropists, and a dedicated base of left-wing donors. It frequently touts its independence from corporate influence, yet its financial supporters include major progressive grant-giving organizations like the Tides Foundation, Ford Foundation, and Surdna Foundation—all of which are known for bankrolling causes associated with radical feminism, climate alarmism, racial equity, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and anti-capitalist efforts.
Because it is not bound by commercial incentives or corporate boards, Truthout operates in a bubble of ideological purity. It is free to advance fringe or extreme positions that even mainstream progressive outlets might hesitate to platform. This has made it a favorite among academic radicals, environmental extremists, far-left labor activists, prison abolitionists, and those who believe traditional constitutional democracy must be overthrown in favor of so-called “liberatory” frameworks.
Its editorial decisions are not guided by newsworthiness in the traditional sense, but by moral urgency framed through an intersectional lens. Journalism, in the Truthout paradigm, is not about inquiry but advocacy. Articles are selected and shaped according to how effectively they “dismantle oppression,” “amplify marginalized voices,” and “decolonize” discourse—terms that appear routinely in its content and mission statements.
Truthout has also developed strong connections with progressive academic institutions and leftist think tanks. Many of its contributors are affiliated with university departments steeped in critical theory, queer studies, or environmental justice. This academic-activist pipeline ensures that its worldview is not only consistently radical but also steeped in the jargon and frameworks of the cultural Left.
In short, Truthout is less a news outlet and more a movement organ—dedicated not to informing the public in a balanced manner, but to driving social transformation along Neo-Marxist lines. It wears its bias as a badge of honor and considers traditional notions of objectivity or fairness to be tools of white supremacy and capitalist oppression.
Truthout on 20 Ideological Flashpoints
- Election Integrity and Voter Laws
Truthout consistently frames election security efforts as veiled forms of voter suppression and racism. Voter ID laws are treated as tools of “white supremacy” designed to disenfranchise minorities. Articles emphasize alleged GOP gerrymandering, “right-wing disinformation,” and conspiracies of authoritarianism. - Abortion and Reproductive Rights
Abortion is heralded as sacred. Truthout frequently promotes “reproductive justice,” a term encompassing not only abortion access but government-funded care and the dismantling of any moral or religious critique of abortion. Pro-life laws are demonized as patriarchal and theocratic. - Gender Identity and Transgender Policies
The outlet fully embraces radical gender ideology. It advocates for child transition, unrestricted access to “gender-affirming care,” and the abolition of biological sex categories. Dissenting voices are labeled transphobic or fascist. - Race and Systemic Racism
Truthout holds to an unyielding belief in systemic racism, white privilege, and the need for race-based redistribution. It champions reparations, DEI mandates, and the total restructuring of American institutions through a CRT framework. - Climate Change and Energy Policy
It demands not only decarbonization but the complete dismantling of capitalism, which it views as the root of climate change. Truthout regularly promotes eco-socialism, degrowth economics, and environmental “reparations” for the Global South. - Immigration and Border Security
Truthout opposes borders, ICE, and virtually all immigration enforcement. It calls for sanctuary cities, amnesty, and the dissolution of “nationalist” policies, which it views as inherently racist. The concept of national sovereignty is portrayed as xenophobic. - Israel and the Middle East Conflict
Truthout’s coverage is vehemently anti-Israel. The Jewish state is labeled a settler-colonial, apartheid regime. Hamas and other militant groups are often rationalized as “resistance movements,” and U.S. support for Israel is condemned as imperialist complicity. - Second Amendment and Gun Control
It calls for broad gun restrictions, supports buyback programs, and ridicules the notion of self-defense as a “myth of white masculinity.” Gun ownership is treated as a social disease linked to racism and toxic nationalism. - LGBTQ+ Rights and Religious Liberty
Truthout opposes religious liberty when it conflicts with LGBTQ+ affirmation. Christian doctrine is frequently smeared as a cover for hate. It favors state enforcement of LGBTQ+ protections in churches, schools, and businesses. - COVID-19 Policy and Mandates
The outlet promoted lockdowns, vaccine mandates, and mask compliance as moral imperatives. It labeled dissenters—especially on religious or constitutional grounds—as selfish or dangerous. It supported social media censorship of alternative viewpoints. - Policing and Criminal Justice
Truthout is one of the loudest voices for prison abolition and defunding police. It believes law enforcement is inherently racist and must be dismantled. It also supports eliminating bail, sentencing, and incarceration as systemic injustices. - Education and Parental Rights
Truthout supports teacher-driven education rooted in DEI ideology. It opposes parental oversight and defends drag queen story hours, gender identity curriculums, and Critical Race Theory as “liberating pedagogy.” - Censorship and Big Tech
It frames content moderation as a vital defense against “fascism.” Government-corporate coordination to suppress “misinformation” is not only tolerated but encouraged—so long as it targets right-wing or Christian speech. - January 6 and Political Violence
Truthout likens January 6 to a coup and calls for mass prosecutions, including for speech. It has no similar condemnation for leftist riots, including BLM protests or Antifa violence, which it often rationalizes as righteous rebellion. - Corporate Wokeness and ESG
It celebrates corporate DEI and ESG programs but criticizes them as insufficient if they don’t fundamentally dismantle capitalist systems. Corporations are urged to use their influence to enforce “justice,” not merely brand themselves as woke. - Hunter Biden, Biden Family, and Political Corruption
Truthout either ignores these stories or claims they are far-right smear campaigns. It treats any scrutiny of the Biden family as manufactured distraction to cover for “fascist threats” from the GOP. - Trump and the Republican Party
Truthout sees Trump as the face of modern fascism and the GOP as a white nationalist movement. The site constantly warns that American democracy cannot survive unless the GOP is politically destroyed. - Affirmative Action and Racial Preferences
Affirmative action is viewed as a moral necessity. Any rollback is described as racist and regressive. It calls for expanding racial quotas and implementing equity mandates across all sectors of public and private life. - International Institutions and Sovereignty
Truthout views bodies like the U.N., WHO, and WEF as helpful in subverting national sovereignty, which it considers a tool of colonialism. It champions “global justice” through transnational institutions. - Culture War Issues
The site promotes drag culture, inclusive language, abortion rites, and even open attacks on traditional family and biblical morality. It deconstructs “hate speech” to mean anything that affirms objective truth or traditional values.
Final Evaluation and Conclusion
Truthout doesn’t just flirt with the far Left—it embodies its deepest ideological convictions. This is not a news outlet in the conventional sense. It is a movement platform, a digital pamphleteer for the Neo-Marxist Left. It exists not to weigh competing viewpoints or serve the general public but to radicalize, to deconstruct, and to agitate. It speaks the language of grievance, revolution, and redistribution. And it wears its disdain for constitutionalism, Christianity, capitalism, and conservatism openly.
There is no illusion of balance here. Every article is calibrated toward a goal: to undermine what Truthout considers oppressive structures—faith, family, police, patriarchy, markets, and moral tradition—and replace them with an intersectional utopia governed by the fluid whims of identity politics. Its role in the media landscape is not simply oppositional to conservative thought—it is antagonistic toward moderation itself. Even center-left institutions like The New York Times are occasionally chastised by Truthout for being insufficiently radical.
Truthout’s influence is limited compared to larger outlets, but its outsized role in shaping activist thought and academic trends should not be overlooked. The publication functions as a kind of ideological forge—crafting narratives and frames that eventually filter into larger progressive media, educational curricula, nonprofit activism, and public policy. From prison abolition to eco-socialism, from gender self-ID to anti-Israel invective, Truthout serves as an upstream source for some of the most destabilizing ideas to circulate in modern discourse.
For readers seeking truth in any classical or biblical sense, Truthout is a cautionary tale. It has weaponized the very concept of truth—not as something to be discovered or preserved, but as something to be constructed for the purpose of social power. In this world, “truth” is not defined by coherence, evidence, or divine revelation, but by its usefulness to “the oppressed”—as defined by the ever-changing doctrines of wokeness.
In short, Truthout belongs in the Hall of Shame not merely for its bias, but for its open hostility to ordered liberty, objective morality, and the foundations of Western civilization. It does not seek to reform but to upend. It does not aim to inform but to indoctrinate. And it does not cherish truth—it rebrands it as activism.

Realize that I sometimes use phrases like “trans man”, “trans woman”, “transgender” , “transition” or similar language for ease of communication. Obviously, as a conservative Christian, I don’t believe anyone has ever become the opposite sex. Unfortunately, we are forced to adopt the language of the left to discuss some topics without engaging in lengthy qualifying statements that make conversations awkward.
