Margaret Atwood’s dystopian fiction has become a political weapon—used by radical feminists, progressives, and abortion advocates to misrepresent Christian convictions, demonize traditional families, and incite fear of biblical morality.
A Dystopian Novel Turned Political Symbol
Published in 1985, The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood. It imagines a future where a totalitarian theocracy—called the Republic of Gilead—has overthrown the U.S. government. Due to environmental collapse and declining fertility, women are conscripted into rigid roles: Wives, Marthas (housekeepers), and Handmaids—fertile women forced to bear children for the ruling class through ritualized rape. The regime claims to follow a form of Christianity, though it perverts Scripture for political power.
The novel became a staple in progressive literature and was adapted into a television series by Hulu in 2017, which continues to influence political discourse today.
Cultural Appearances and Activist Co-optation
The Handmaid’s Tale has moved beyond fiction into the realm of political propaganda—especially used by the abortion lobby, radical feminists, and leftist activists. Protesters at statehouses, Supreme Court hearings, and women’s marches have donned the red cloaks and white bonnets of Atwood’s Handmaids, claiming America is on the verge of reproductive tyranny.
Examples:
- After the Dobbs v. Jackson decision overturned Roe v. Wade, activists appeared in Handmaid costumes to protest “loss of bodily autonomy.”
- Hollywood elites have invoked the Handmaid imagery to oppose parental rights laws, pro-life legislation, and religious influence in education.
- Abortion clinics and feminist groups use imagery from the show in promotional materials to link opposition to abortion with totalitarian misogyny.
In reality, these comparisons are false and inflammatory. They equate the defense of innocent life and God-given gender distinctions with systemic rape and oppression—a grotesque distortion of biblical teaching.
Ideological Alignment: Feminism and Neo-Marxism
The underlying ideology of The Handmaid’s Tale aligns closely with radical feminism and Neo-Marxism:
Radical Feminism
The book portrays traditional roles of women—mother, wife, homemaker—as inherently oppressive. It suggests that male leadership and female submission, even when voluntary, are dangerous or abusive.
Neo-Marxism
Atwood’s Gilead is a symbol of the oppressor/oppressed dialectic, a cornerstone of Neo-Marxist thought. Women are the oppressed class; patriarchal religious men are the oppressors. The show encourages rebellion, redefinition of gender, and the dismantling of traditional family structures.
This worldview pits “liberation” against biblical morality. It casts sexual boundaries, childbearing, and marriage as forms of slavery rather than gifts from God.
Biblical Teaching on Marriage and Childbearing
Far from Gilead’s cruelty, biblical Christianity honors women, celebrates childbearing, and upholds marriage as a joyful, God-ordained covenant.
1. Creation Mandate
God’s first command to man and woman was to reproduce and fill the earth:
And God blessed them. And God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth…(Genesis 1:28)
This is not a curse, but a blessing. Children are never a burden in Scripture—they are a reward:
Lo, children are a heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. (Psalm 127:3)
2. Marriage as a Covenant of Love and Mutual Honor
Biblical marriage is built upon sacrificial love, not domination:
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it… (Ephesians 5:25)
Giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life… (1 Peter 3:7)
Biblical patriarchy is not tyranny—it is a call for men to lead with humility and protect their families with gentleness.
I suspect the family backgrounds of the radical feminists and pro-life protesters involved some abuse of parental authority and the lack of admirable parental role models.
The Barren Womb in Scripture
While infertility is not a moral failing, Scripture recognizes the deep ache of the barren womb. Barrenness is portrayed as grievous and undesired—not virtuous or freeing.
Examples:
- Sarah (Genesis 11:30), Rachel (Genesis 30:1), Hannah (1 Samuel 1:5–11), and Elizabeth (Luke 1:7) all mourned their infertility.
- God heard their prayers and, in most cases, opened their wombs to bring forth children with redemptive purposes.
Scripture on the Barren Womb:
There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough: The grave; and the barren womb… (Proverbs 30:15–16)
This longing is not oppressive—it is woven into the fabric of womanhood as a natural and God-given desire.
The Left’s Malthusian Deception and Birth Rate Collapse
While Scripture encourages fruitfulness, the progressive left often embraces Malthusian fears—the idea that too many people will lead to global disaster. This worldview fuels abortion, anti-natalism, climate panic, and hostility to the family.
Real Consequences of Low Birth Rates:
- Nations like Japan, South Korea, and much of Europe face economic collapse and aging populations.
- Birth rates in the U.S. have fallen below replacement level.
- Christianity is declining in part because Christians are not multiplying biologically or spiritually.
God’s design for life, marriage, and family is not only good—it is essential to cultural survival.
Don’t Confuse Fiction with Faith
The Handmaid’s Tale is not a mirror of Christian teaching—it is a weaponized narrative created to stoke fear and hatred of biblical truth. The Word of God exalts women, celebrates motherhood, and ordains marriage as a joyful, sacrificial bond.
The left uses Atwood’s dystopia as a smear tactic to demonize pro-life Christians and distort God’s beautiful design for the sexes. But Scripture is clear: life is good, children are a blessing, and marriage reflects Christ and the Church.
We must not let fiction define our faith. Let God’s Word speak louder than Hollywood’s scripts.
