Barbary slave trade

A system of slavery conducted primarily by North African Muslim states along the Barbary Coast (modern Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya) from roughly the sixteenth through early nineteenth centuries. During this period, pirates and slave traders captured, purchased, and enslaved large numbers of Europeans and others for labor, ransom, or sale.
